This is a heavy steel bowl, like the 1 that comes with the heavier duty KitchenAid (I have a bigger unit than the Artisan to manage rye bread dough, dense stuff that it is.)
The additional bowl is fairly handy for undertaking a lot of cake batters like Genoise. Genoise is leavened solely by beaten egg whites, so an added bowl to do the whites is especially useful. You can do part of a batter in a single bowl, pull it off the KitchenAid and then put in a clean bowl for the egg whites, which you know need to be beaten in a clean bowl with no fat lest you break the formation of the foamed whites.
It is also handy for multicolored batters (checker cake) and for carrying out two sorts of bread at once. I don't have to have it each and every day, but when I do will need an additional bowl, it really is terrific to have a single handy.
Like this bowl a lot much better than the one that came with it. It is heavier and I like the handle.
